Water Management

Water Conservation Program

The water conservation program of Bilkent University includes the following activities:

  • The rainwater collected throughout the campus is transferred to the university pond through several channels. The irrigation needs of the campus land can be entirely met by the university pond. In addition, the water accumulated in the stream bed on the main campus of the university is used for landscape irrigation in some areas.
  • The amount of water consumed from the university pond for landscape irrigation exhibits strong seasonality. While the highest levels of water consumption were observed in July and August, there was no consumption from December to March in recent years. See Figure 1 for the water consumption levels from January 2022 to May 2024. Despite this seasonal variation, the water level of the university pond has fluctuated within a quite limited range between 966 and 974 centimeters. See Figure 2 for the pond water levels from May 2012 to May 2024.
  • The domestic water in some buildings is stored, purified, and returned to the system for reuse.

Water Pollution Control

Bilkent University pays great attention to water cleanliness to protect the campus environment that is home to diverse types of creatures. Special filtering systems are utilized for the water available in staff and student kitchens and are changed periodically at least once a year.

Water-saving
Devices

Bilkent University has initiated the use of water-saving devices, but their campus-wide use has not yet been fully completed.
