8RE Actions

Sustainable Waste Management System of Bilkent University has 8RE actions which are: 

Rethink, Repurpose, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Re Store, Reseperate, Reuse and Recycle.

By the Zero Waste and National Waste Framework Directive in all faculty buildings and campus area, all wastes are collected seperately by their types such as : 

  • Recycable packing wastes(papers, plastics, glasses, metals,)
  • Non recycable wastes(organic wastes)
  • Wastes and contaminated materials from laboratories, medical wastes, medicals which are cannot be used by the expiration date, used oils, fluorescents, batteries,  toner and cartridges are collected seperately in the different containers or temporary hazardous waste areas. 

20/04/2020, Bilkent Üniversitesi  has complied with the criteria to obtain the Basic Level ‘Zero Waste’ Certificate of Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change and became the first university in Turkey to attain this certification.

23/12/2023, The third “Zero Waste Summit and Award Ceremony” organized by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change was held at the Haliç Congress Center in İstanbul. The Zero Waste Best Practices Award was given to Bilkent University.

18/01/2024, Zero Waste Committee by 32 members. 

11/03/2024, A logo competition with the theme ‘BİLKENT ZERO WASTE’ has been launched for “World’s Zero Waste Day”.

29/03/2024, World Zero Waste Day has organized at the spring festival area. World Zero Waste Day aims to raise awareness for sustainability and waste management.  The day included many events, such as artworks, talks, sports events, zero-waste quizzes and workshops as well as a Radio Bilkent broadcast. There was also a live performance of sculptor artwork with scrap musical materials.
